1. Dry Falls, Washington
This place is genuinely prominent; I was speechless looking at the massive, quiet cliffs. It’s hard to imagine a waterfall four times wider than Niagara once roared here. The scale is intimidating in a good way. While standing at the overlook, I felt connected to the overwhelming geological history of our planet. One of nature’s great waterfalls in Franklin, NC.

2. Wayah Bald Lookout Tower
The drive up the gravel road to Wayah Bald was as fun as the scenic views from the top. This historic stone tower, built in 1937, has fantastic 360-degree vistas of the Appalachian Mountains. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail.. I chose the path from Wayah Crest to Siler Bald. Before long, you hike a gently (and steeply) climbing scenic, beautiful forest before reaching a grassy bald with great views. It’s a moderately strenuous hike and a nice addition to any list of Franklin hiking trails.

4. Winding Stair Gap
This spot is a major gateway to the Appalachian Trail. I started a short hike south from here toward Albert Mountain. Walking down Main Street was like stepping into a time machine. The historic buildings occupy eccentric shops and cafes. I liked the most friendly atmosphere and the rocking chairs placed outside storefronts, inviting you to sit for a while. 9. Scottish Tartans Museum
As someone with Scottish roots, this museum was a fascinating stop. It’s the only one of its kind in the US! I spent an hour looking up my family’s tartan in their database and learning about the history of the kilt. The exhibits are very detailed. This museum, located in the old jailhouse in the town, has quite a lot to offer. There is an enormous collection, containing everything from local rubies to an 800-pound amethyst. The coolest part for me was the fluorescent mineral room, where the rocks glow when exposed to blacklight. It’s a fun, educational stop and one of the top Franklin, NC museums.
